This position is responsible for overseeing the Nationwide Group Benefits portfolio of products from the perspective of risk and profitability, recommending appropriate action as needed, and offering up solutions through a combination of rate adjustments, plan amendments, and distribution modifications. Functions to ensure that Nationwide underwriting guidelines are adhered to while working in concert with its reinsurers and Actuaries to make risk decisions requiring facultative approval.

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Prior experience with the Group Health Benefits underwriting strongly preferred
  • Strong medical terminology and/or understanding of anatomy
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Insurance-related work experience
  • Business, finance, economics, and mathematics are particularly helpful
  • Knowledge of the health insurance market
  • Demonstrates strong ability to work independently and to adjust schedule to meet service standards

This role is eligible for fully remote work.

This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.

As a Sr Analyst, you’ll analyze risk for individual applicants and employer group coverage, determine eligibility based on application, product, state signed, etc. and utilize all other applicable sources to make underwriting decisions. Additionally, you will be called on to make recommendations for underwriting policy and updating the Training Guide. You will also help to manage risk assessment of specialty products and projects as assigned.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain positive relationships with our internal and external customers through effective written and verbal communication skills, including agents, proposed insureds, and state Departments of Insurance.

  • Make risk selection decisions in a quality, timely, and productive manner

  • Process and underwrite specialty products, project work as assigned

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for lower-level underwriters

  • Maintain understanding the basic framework of how our processing systems work to be able to move work properly.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Manager or Director.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Bachelors’ degree preferred.

Experience: 3 or more years of experience preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: Life Office Management Association (LOMA) preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong analytical skills in risk analysis. Attention to details. Must relate well to other departments that are involved in the underwriting process. Computer skills (not necessarily insurance driven) including Microsoft products of Excel, Word, and Outlook. Work prioritization skills. Knowledge of how our products function and what they cover to be able to better comprehend risk analysis decision making.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resource Business Partner.
